A rheumatologist is a medical doctor who completed training as an internal medicine specialist then subsequently completed additional training in the subspecialty of rheumatology.

How many types of arthritis are there? How are they diagnosed?

There are over a hundred types of arthritis. The diagnosis is determined by a combination of the history provided, physical exam, imaging (x-rays, MRI, ultrasound, etc.), and laboratory tests (i.e., blood work).

What kinds of treatment options are available for patients with rheumatic diseases?

This depends on the type of arthritis or other rheumatic condition. Common treatments include medications, physical therapy, and injections. Your rheumatologist will discuss your options based on the disease being treated.

What are infusions?

Some medications are not available in pill form. Instead, they are administered by IV (intravenous) route. This is a routine method of treatment in rheumatology. It can be conveniently done in an office setting by a trained member of the healthcare team, usually a registered nurse.
